According to a report by the Guardian, at least 70,000 gulls, geese and other birds were allegedly shot and trapped in New York in an attempt to make skies safer for planes. Notably, the bird-killing programs were ramped up after a jetliner was forced to land in the city’s Hudson River after birds were sucked into its engine in 2009.  Meanwhile, it is not clear if the killings have made skies any safer.
