NASA is preparing to build an astronaut-tended space station or "deep space gateway" in the lunar orbit that would help prepare for missions to deep space targets including Mars. The project is scheduled to begin in late 2018. NASA also aims to promote a deep space transport spacecraft for crewed missions to deep space destinations such as Mars, by 2030.
