Mukhtar Ansari, a gangster-turned-politician reportedly won from the Mau constituency in Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections with 96,793 votes, defeating the nearest candidate by over 8,000 votes. Notably, Ansari was the sitting MLA from the constituency and pled allegiance to Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party before the elections. Interestingly, Ansari has been accused of murdering a BJP MLA.
