Kerala makes Malayalam mandatory in schools

The Kerala government has reportedly made the teaching of Malayalam mandatory in all schools in the State. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan reportedly said the new law would apply to all schools regardless of the syllabus they follow and prompted hefty fines on schools that violate the new law. He also reportedly warned the schools against putting up boards or conducting campaigns against speaking Malayalam. The usage of the official language Malayalam has been made compulsory in all government offices from May 1.
