Following a plea filed by a Chennai-based footwear manufacturer, the Delhi High Court declared that a woman’s footwear without a back strap is a sandal and not a chappal, overruling the central government’s claim that it was a chappal. Notably, the government allows only 5% customs duty drawback for chappals, while 10% for sandals.
