A protagonist always needn’t tackle unrealistic problems on Earth to thereby show off his heroism in the world. He can as well encounter situations that any one of us from the other side of the screen are facing/ will face. The tale of a common man with anger management issue is the plot of Sameer Thahir’s directorial, Kali.

Dulquer Salman (Sidharth) and Sai Palavi (Anjali) make a healthy pair. With just the core idea of the story being given all the priority, Sidharth and Anjali get to neatly portray their character sketch spending no time in bringing out an artificial form in a dream-song. In the role of a rugged, robust, angry young man, Dulquer’s flawless toned face with clean features helps him to reflect the hot-headed nature of his role. Sai Pallavi does impress you with her performance, though she ends up crying all the time. Her controlled acting as a supportive wife is convincing. Chemban Vinod Jose has successfully continued his streak as a baddie following Darvinte Parinamam.

One can stay genuine to the characterisation penned by the storyteller only if they manage to look right. Neat costumes and makeup adds more quality to the performance.

Gopi Sundar’s music bolster’s the narrative effectively. Sameer Thahir’s hold behind the lens shows off as every frame exhibits effort and Gireesh Gangadharan as the cinematographer has contributed well. Vivek Harshan yet again takes you forward without any difficulty by employing smooth cuts.

Special mention to the stunt choreography as it is cinematic, at the same time is not overdone. It does not come across as a fight that an angry common man cannot indulge in. The engagement factor might take a slight dip during the second half of the story as the narrator does not have much to say, that is, the action of events is only few. But the short runtime of 1 hour 58 minutes saves the film further.

When a simple tale with a clear character sketch on paper comes alive after the production process, it will look like Kali.

Verdict: Kali has Dulquer’s anger, Sai Palavi’s plight and much more to offer as the director’s vision is clear!
