It's not always easy to make a good comedy entertainer and that being the case, it's only fair to say that actor-TV host Nadirshah has done a good job with his directorial debut Amar Akbar Anthony. Featuring Prithviraj, Indrajith and Jayasurya in the titular roles, this film is an out and out comedy.

It was always an expectation with this film whether the three actors would be able to recreate their Classmates chemistry on screen again. The answer is yes, although Amar, Akbar and Anthony are three very different characters with quirks of their own. Prithviraj has stepped up on his comic timing and delivers well while Jayasurya, as you would expect, has brought his own charm to his character. But two performances that really stand out are Indrajith and KPAC Lalitha, with some hilarious one-liners. Namitha Pramod really did not get the space she deserves, but definitely makes the most of her presence.

The film narrates the story of three friends from Mattancheri who set out to woo a woman but end up embroiled in a lot more. A major win for this film is the situational comedy which is well-conceived and nicely thought of by debutant screenwriters Bipin George and Vishnu Unnikrishnan. The pace of the screenplay does drag a bit in the second half with a few twists and turns along the way. But certain situations and sequences could still have been tighter, thus avoiding an excessive running time.

Nadirshah has done a commendable job as director, better still for having brought in his own comic nuances to the performances. Background score by Bijibal complements the visuals for most part.

With a cinematographer like Sujith Vassudev on board, you can be certain of some interesting visuals and he doesn't disappoint in this department, but delivering only what was expected.
Verdict: Amar Akbar Anthony is a family entertainer. Don't go expecting a classic, it has screenplay issues, but you'll have fun.
