His phenomenal performance in Pizza, directed by Karthik Subbaraj, set up the stage for him. He backed it up with Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom (directed by Balaji Tharaneetharan), Soodhu Kavvum (directed by Nalan Kumarasamy) and Idharkkuthaane Aasaipattai Balakumara (directed by Gokul) featuring him in idiosyncratic roles that earned him voluminous number of cult followers, thereby cementing his position in the hearts of millions of people across the globe.

The style in which he delivered dialogues such as ‘Ennachu... cricket vilayudunom’ and ‘Kumudha Happy Annachi’ appeared as though they were tailor made for him, making people go berserk, urging them to create interesting memes that went on to hit the social media by storm.

Vijay Sethupathi was awarded the Behindwoods Gold Medal for Best Acting Performance for his roles in Soodhu Kavvum and Idharkkuthaane Aasaipattai Balakumara in the year 2013, at the Behindwoods Gold Summit 2014.
