Debuting with director Vasanth's Nerukku Ner, he went on to act in a series of movies, before giving a stellar performance in Nandha, which was a turning point film in his career.

Suriya turned out to be a director’s delight and an unshakable entertainer with meritorious performances in movies like Mounam Pesiyadhe, Kaakha Kaakha, Pithamagan, Perazhagan, Ghajini, Vaaranam Aayiram, Ayan, Singam and Singam-2. He made his Bollywood debut with Ram Gopal Varma's Raktha Charithra which went on to gain critical acclaim.
