I
refrained from writing this piece until
a good 2 weeks passed since the movie
Vinaithaandi Varuvaayaa released. This
was due to requests from certain 'quarters'
to me so that I don't release the storyline
thus spoiling the suspense and romanticism
that the movie had in abundance. I have
not written a note in sometime now as
I have been away recollecting myself but
I have returned now with the inspiration
to write about a movie that brought me
to my senses. Not because it had an extremely
engrossing storyline or mind boggling
special effects. But it was simply because
the movie was so realistic and it related
to everyone so much I felt this was the
selling point of the movie and I believe
many would say the same.
I couldn't convince myself to put a title
for this note as the topic was too vast
and complex to discuss. No, its not rocket
science! Even rocket science we could
explain and describe given the right credentials,
but how do you do so for true love? I
don't think anyone ever came close. Some
might say that Shakespeare did a good
job with Sonnet 18, but that was love
through his eyes. How about love through
my eyes and yours? Not even close. Love
is unique towards everyone and hardly
a day passes by without us coming into
contact with this 'force'. Love is everywhere
and as the song goes all you have to do
is just 'Feel It'.
Vinaithaandi Varuvaayaa is not a very
unique love

story; in fact it only contained the simple storyline
every other Tamil movie has had for ages. Boy meets
girl. Boy likes girl. Girl's parents oppose etc. But
what really struck me about this movie was how well
Gautham Menon was able to relate the story of Jesse
and Karthik towards me and you. Every scene, dialogue
and location was carefully scripted and shot to perfection.
I almost felt as if every one of us could simply switch
roles with either Karthik or Jesse and the outcome
of the movie would have not been any different at
all.
I liked the opening scene of the movie where Karthik
states that we can’t look for true love in life,
but it should find us. This phrase has been repeatedly
used in many movies but people failed to realize the
true meaning of it. Love finding us doesn't mean in
some divine intervention where God has already decided
who we are going to spend the rest of our lives with.
It’s actually the right set of circumstances
which leads up to it and many people have had the
wrong notion that this is in fact related to God.
No, God has no control over this because we are responsible
for our lives, not HIM. Many people are so gifted
and Gautham capitalized on this by depicting Karthik
as the gifted one.
Well, not so gifted I guess if you have already watched
the movie. The ending depicted the truth and reality
that all of us have had to endure today. That is,
most often things happen against our wishes and we
have to live by it. Its one of life's greatest lessons
and for the most of us, we learn it the hard way.
Gautham is a gifted director. That's because he knows
how to capture those precious moments that make us
simply 'Human'. When we see those moments on screen
especially in his movies, it makes us want to say
'Man, that has happened to me!' I was no exception.
When I say this, several scenes from the movie comes
into mind and I would like to share them with everyone.
I really loved the scene after the argument between
Jesse and Karthik about to be in love or to not be
in love. It’s the scene where Jesse walks towards
Karthik and he says 'Look at her; she behaves as if
nothing ever happened!' How lovely! Those were simple
words but how much it related to all of us? How many
times have we been in this situation? I’ll be
the first to tell you that I have and I believe many
of my friends would say the same. We fight like cats
and dogs with the opposite sex and the next day, they
appear and talk happily as if nothing ever happened.
The next scene that comes into mind is when Jesse
calls Karthik while he is busy in Goa to tell him
that she would like to come down. On screen, it's
pretty clear that Jesse going to Goa in order to meet
Karthik was never going to be a good idea as he was
not in an accommodating situation at all. But try
applying this in real life with the knowledge that
both Jesse and Karthik were unaware of their respective
circumstances. To Jesse, Karthik not wanting her to
come down was as if everything has changed since he
has started working. To Karthik, Jesse demanding to
come down was like she doesn't understand or doesn't
care to understand his situation at all. Who is at
fault? I'll let you be the judge. Now, how many of
us have been in this situation? I see many hands raised
already.
The last scene and to me, the most memorable scene
of the movie was when Karthik comes down from Goa
to see Jesse at her house. Even here, Gautham has
had a touch of genius where Jesse sends Karthik a
text while he was on the way saying everything is
over. The first thing Karthik does when he sees her
is to ask her what's with the text. As usual, she
said (as if nothing ever happened) that she thought
he would never come. Sounds familiar? You bet! I also
liked the part where Jesse says that she enjoyed the
pain she was enduring and wanted to endure it even
further.
I
especially loved the part where she said that she
didn't want him to wait and wanted him to move on
with life. That's life isn't it? When you are staring
at something that you know will never be yours or
is just never meant to be yours how could you understand
if the person says 'I want you but I am sorry I
can't be with you? To me this was the most painful
part of the movie. Because Jesse was everything
Karthik ever wanted and he was everything she ever
wanted but plain circumstances just couldn't unite
them. If I was in Karthik's shoes, I would be heart
broken because as he has said repeatedly throughout
the movie Jesse was a woman worth sacrificing your
life for, not your love.
Despite
all this, Gautham had a touch of human to this movie.
As we all 'wished' that certain miracles happen,
Gautham exceptionally crafted that scene at the
park where Karthik confesses that he never moved
on and how he still loves his Jesse. I read before
the movie released that Gautham was going to have
two endings to this movie but I never in my wildest
dreams imagined that he could fuse both endings
in the same movie. It was pure genius. Silently,
I believe many of us wished that Jesse and Karthik
indeed united, but Gautham was quick to point out
that many things in life often happens when we least
expected them to and most often they would go against
our wishes.
Lastly
before I end this note I sincerely hope that those
who have not watched this movie do so in the near
future and admire these wonderful scenes that Gautham
has created. It’s not very often that what
you see on screen related so much to you in real
life. I loved the movie a lot and I believe many
people would share my opinion.
