After
seeing the "ondra ton weight da"
trailer, I was so worried about the future
of Sun Pictures whose previous release
was a Sura-sized disaster. But I had forgotten
to take the director of "Singam"
into consideration. Hari somehow reminds
me of Vikraman. Both of them are absolutely
clichéd directors who work within
a particular template and still work wonders
in it. "Singam" is further proof
of it.
"Singam" is a typical commercial
masala with the right mix of ingredients.
Suriya has come a long way from being
a shy co-star with Vijay in "Nerukku
Ner" to teaching lessons to Vijay
on how to deliver a commercial sixer.
He gets the Thoothukudi accent right but
he shouts a lot damaging the ears. Dialogues
are unnecessarily lengthy and pointless.
An example: Pasikaga pongal thirudravana
vituduven, aana rusikaga payasam thirudravana
vidamaten!
Anushka (Believe it or not!) is very much
a part of the storytelling. Yet, her real
work (as always) is in the songs. She
tries to go overboard in the "en
idhayam" number before being restrained
by the Censor Board. Vivek's track is
an absolute yawn. From being a chinna
kalaivanar, he has become a Chinna Venniradai
Moorthy. Listening to his double meaning
dialogues makes one ask "who the
hell gave this guy a Padmasri?".
Prakash Raj delivers nothing special.
These directors are doing injustice to
a National award winner.

The strong point of the movie is that there are loads
of clichés which do not strike us because of
the lightning-speed screenplay. DSP spoils the movie
with his loud BGM score. Suriya as a cop will definitely
make us draw unnecessary comparisons with "Kaakka
Kaakka". But "Singam" is more of "Saami"
than "KK". Hari, the safest bet in Tamil
Cinema, makes Kalanidhi Maaran say a loud "happada"!
