P.S-People
like Prakashraj (Iruvar/Kannathil
Muthamittal), Prabhu (Chandramukhi),
Goundamani (Gentleman), Sarathbabu
(Mullum malarum/Netrikann) etc.
were ruled out of the list to
make sure that predominant supporting
role actors alone feature in
the list.
If I had to pick ten out of
these twenty extraordinary performers
who weren't the protagonist
or the |
|
antagonist
of the movie, I would chose
the following ten. These characters
have established themselves
as signature roles and have
performed roles of the 'supporting
character' cadre. These roles
have been the cause of turning
points, have given the hero
a backup or a hurdle as the
movie gets cooled down or heated
up. They are inevitable. This
post is dedicated to Late.Shri
Poornam Vishwanathan, a veteran
supporting actor who has donned
superb roles to perfection in
Varumayin Niram Sivappu, Ninaithaale
Inikkum, Mahanadhi, Aasai and
many other movies.
10. Karan-Kathal Kottai
Last in the list but not least,
Karan is a oft-quoted sidekick.
Each of his role in Kannedhire
thonrinal, Love Today and Kadhal
Mannan are unique and are treated
with ease and elegance by Karan.
The handsome unemployed in Kadhal
Kottai speaks of youthful philosophies
in this movie, which are interesting
only because he played it.
9. V.K.Ramasaamy-Arangetra Velai
The old house owner who runs
a drama troupe gets into trouble
when Tom and Jerry rent his
house. Several non-scripted
plays get staged in his theatre
and VKR makes a joke out of
even a wrong number to his office.
Such a witty, restless and immensely
talented actor plays an astounding
role such as in Aanpaavam,Velaikkaran
and Bharatha Vilas.
8. Major Sundhararajan-Ethirneechal
The man who acted Major when
he was a minor! A KB product
with signs of a legend in every
role. As the mentor and guardian
of Madhu in Ethirneechal he
plays an inspirational dad of
great virues. He has also played
major roles in many KB movies
apart from Iruvar, Andha Oru
Nimidam and Billa.
7. Sriman-Sethu
'Cheeyan'-The word became so
popular, thanks to Sriman. His
natural act in Sethu deserved
an award. As a friend and guide,
he displays various emotions
when he assists Vikram - in
love, during local disputes
and the final tragedy. One of
the finest actors of the current
scene, Sriman has also had good
characters in Panchathanthiram,
Nala Dhamayanthi, Dheena and
Friends.
6. Thengai Seenivaasan-Thillu
Mullu
The very name makes you laugh,
doesn’t it? "Suppi-yaathu
Kappi-yavathu...get out I say!"
can only be bowled in style
by none other than our Thengai
Seenivaasan. His funny nuances
and facial expressions will
always be in our memories. He
plays the manger who is fooled
over and over by Rajnikanth
only to make us laugh till we
cry. By the way, he has delivered
good performances in several
other movies like Billa, Kazhugu,Tik
tik tik and so on.
5. Saravanan-Paruthiveeran
Sevvazhai is one hell of a character.
A guy who was a mere dupe to
an actor coming all the way
back to prove himself shows
the world that he was not a
mere puppet. With a funny moustache
all over his face reducing Kanja
Karuppu as a comedian and playing
Sithappu to a veeran, looked
great only because of Saravanan.
4. Baalaiya-Kadhalikka Neramillai
The way he says 'Asokaru' is
enough. He is an estate owner
who's rich and is a dad of two
beautiful lasses.The scene where
Nagesh narrates a story to Baalaiya
is a classic performance by
two legends. His peculiar dialogue
delivery make him a mimicry
artiste's favourite. Humour
sense clubbed with tremendous
output of skill in drama makes
Baalaiya, who has given valuable
performances in Thiruvilayaadal
and Thillana Mohanambal, one
of the best ever sideroles.
3. Manivannan-Amaidhippadai
Manivannan is how he is called
in the movie. His trademark
laugh, nakkal and Coimbatore
dialect gives enough room for
Manivannan to play it to perfection.
He is a politician who becomes
a ladder to grooming politician
Sathyaraj and in the process
gets kicked. A subtle villainy,
dark humour and the natural
koyambuthoor kusumbu makes Manivannan's
act a well deserved #3 position.
2. Chaaruhaasan-Uthiripookal
Just his eyes speak. He never
uttered a strong or a loud syllable.
Profound and clear, playing
a father-in law of a rugged
villain, Chaaruhaasan gives
a textbook performance of acting.
A performance of a lifetime.
1. Janagaraj-Nayagan
A benchmark for sidekick roles.
Sethu was the perfect right
hand of Velu Naicker, and anyone
will remember good old Janagaraj
for his grin, flawless dialogue
delivery and a vein of violence.
He has given valuable performances
as a comedian in many movies
but Nayagan will stay as a zenith
for such a stellar performance.
