 I always felt that she should be rewarded with something much more than the mere awards she had garnered.
Or maybe it is a curse to be Tamil and acting as a typical Tamilan could be the reason why she is left out. This is common among Tamil movies, where many great talents are not recognized and the same person gets recognized over and over again just because they have the influence and are much more popular among the important people in cine world.
What is the point appreciating and talking great about a person once they are dead? It is important to recognize someone when they are alive. That would make her journey more worthwhile knowing that she has been recognized.
When talking about character actress cum comedy, Tamil cinema has only appreciated names like Manorama, Kovai Sarala or Sachu. But it is undeniable fact that these people are great actresses on their own means. But why not Gandhimathi? Why she is not recognized as much as she is supposed to be worth of? Why can’t she be recognized as what Manorama was given? I believe she has done some roles which can’t be done by anyone in the movie world and she has been a trendsetter.
Look at the masterpiece and gem of a movies she has acted, she stood out and I don’t think no one else could have done the similar roles as well as she has done it. She was a trendsetter on so many village background movies where she has converted herself into realism.
Each one of these movies was a class by itself.
I just would like to end hoping that big cinema names like Kamal, Rajni, Balachander, Suhashini, Radhika will step in and recognize her through some tributes which will rest her soul in peace. It is time also for others like Vadivukarasi, S N Lakshmi to be recognized while they are around.
