I
watched Pokkisham recently
and quite did not agree with
Behindwoods review perhaps
for the first time. The movie
is quiet good. Before I write
about the positives in the
movie I would like to point
out the negatives also in
the film.
1. Make-up of old aged Padmapriya
-- could have been better.
2. Cheran's emotions --could
have been better in some scenes
or to be frank he has been
outclassed by Padmapriya
Apart from this, the pace
of the movie is rightly set
and those who comment about
the movie should remember
that a baby is not born the
day after a couple get married
neither does a child become
an adult in a year. After
the trimming of the movie,
I found no unnecessary scenes
in the name of crass comedy
or scenes with double meaning.
Cheran has narrated a dignified
love story in a dignified
manner. And Padmapriya has
done a fabulous, marvelous,
brilliant, lovable job. Body
language, the speaking eyes
which showcase the fear, the
anticipation and the smile....
What more to say??? Glamorous
heroines can better take notes
of lessons from Padma. No

one would
come out watching the movie without admiring
her character. Simply Wow!!! The scene where
they pray in their house and she thinks
of Cheran and the scene where she puts a
"pottu" on her forehead and looks
into the mirror is really nostalgic. Rajesh
also has done quiet a good job and also
Padma's friend. The
dialogues are amazing and hard hitting more
so because they have Tamil literature woven
into them. Cheran's desperation after he
loses track of his lovers hit your heartstrings
but how many youths today have the same
sincerity and respect towards love???
Cheran has driven home a strong message
to today's ultra modern lovers about what
is true love and it was a delight to watch
the 70's not only the streets and outdoors
but also the attitude and behavior of our
elders (both good and bad) in those days.
And the climax where Nadheera speaks to
Lenin's wife and says "God has indeed
given a better wife than me to Lenin"
really exalts women to a great height and
I felt there are many more such women alive
even today: wives who are so sacrificial
and many more Nadheeras who have never been
able to speak their heart out because of
the so called culture driven and male dominated
society. Hats of to Cheran Sir for depicting
women the way they are: "honorable
and adorable". Finally I would like
to say that I felt very happy watching the
movie and definitely it has its moments
which are treasurable.
And to the critics and reviewers, it is
my humble request not to rub off a movie
like Pokkisham and please be dignified in
reviews. It hurts me as a viewer when commercial
movies are adorned and lavishly praised
and the same critics are harsh in their
review of movies with good content. How
much more will it hurt the creator of the
movie? I am not a big Cheran fan by saying
this but a fan of good movies which make
Tamil cinema proud! Even Vaaranam Aayiram
was criticized initially but it managed
to stay afloat and won a million hearts
due to the magical music. I sincerely wish
Pokkisham also proves the critics wrong
and goes on to be a box office hit.
I would be proud if Cheran sir happens to
read this because I somehow want to congratulate
him for this good movie and if he reads
this, it would be more than enough.
Hats off Cheran sir!!! Keep the good work
going!
Best Regards,
