Commercialism
takes a refreshingly new avatar as Tamil
cinema finally has it's first ever road
movie. Serious/offbeat cinema may end
up being successful in attracting niche
audience and cult fan followings but with
PAIYAA director Lingusamy proves that
breezy, light hearted entertainers can
never go out of fashion.
Karthi plays an irresponsible city slicker,
stationed in Bangalore, forever searching
for a job and it's love at first sight
for him as Tamannah crosses his path.
As luck would have it she mistakes him
for a taxi driver and asks for a drive
to Mumbai, concealing from him the fact
that she is actually running away from
a forced marriage and some local gangsters
only to realize soon that Karthi himself
has bigger "mafia" headaches
to deal with.
With the majority of the movie's runtime
dedicated to charting out the events of
a road trip spread over two days, it is
because of some deft screenplay, lovely
little moments and great situational humor
that the first half whizzes by as fast
as it does. Somewhere along the way though
the director seems to have forgotten that
the movie at heart is just a strikingly
simple, not-so-serious romantic tale and
thus ends up giving needless space for
some over the top, done and dusted commercial
elements.

the industry today but judging by the early signs
he has got some serious competition in his own house.
Tamannah proves her mettle in one of those rare roles
in Tamil cinema where the heroine also gets a chance
to act. Milind Soman's role has been reduced to one
of those "mouth horribly cliched lines and serve
as the hero's official punchbag" type characters.
Sad!
Cinematography is spellbinding to say the least, especially
the aerial shots of the car chases. Yuvan has come
up with an infectious album and an apt background
score.
Overall if you could care to excuse some commercial
liberties and caricature villains, get ready for the
ultimate summer treat.
VERDICT: - ROAD RAGE WITH A TOUCH
OF CLASS AND A GENEROUS DOLLOP OF COMMERCIALISM!
