Karthi,
Tamannah, Lingusamy, Yuvan Shankar Raja,
Cloud 9- the banner looked big. The disappointment
–bigger. Lingusamy’s equation
had always been simple Big Hero
+Action + Songs + Loud Villain+ 5Tata
Sumos à Commercial
Blockbuster
But in all his previous such flicks the
reaction was helped by a strong catalyst
called ‘story’. Though all
his movies portrayed larger than life
characters, it was backed up by the story
that had something new. People knew what
to expect- an action packed love story
with 5 good songs. So today when I went
to watch Paiyaa, I had the same expectation
with a little trust that he will have
the necessary ingredients to take the
audience on a roller coaster ride. But
this time the movie was a big time disappointment.
I am reminded of Sathyaraj’s dialogue
in a movie ‘Evanya kadhaikaga padam
edukran, hero call-sheet irukungrakaga
than edukran’. It has now become
a trend that directors, who give a couple
of commercial hits, follow it with a sloppy
movie. The expectations are high because
of their previous projects and because
of the cast. But eventually when the movie
is out, it looks like those hurriedly
made idly upmas when unexpected guests
visit our houses. It was the same with
Dharani’s Kuruvi, KSR’s Aadhavan
and now Ligusamy’s Paiyaa. By committing
to and delivering such movies the directors
are causing dents to their own names.

Now to talk about the movie there is very little to
appreciate. The plot is this- a job-searching Shiva
(Karthi) falls for an IT girl Charu (Tamannah) at
first sight in Bangalore. Then he unexpectedly meets
her at a railway station and rescues her from a forced
marriage and promises to take her to her grandma’s
place in Mumbai. During the journey they encounter
a group that Shiva once had trouble with. The rest
of the story is about how he manages to take her to
safety amidst all the trouble given by different rowdy
groups. Yuvan has done his job well by providing a
couple of good numbers. The cinematography and art
direction in the songs are commendable. We are able
to see Karthi in a fresh look after a sweaty Paruthiveeran
and a dusty Aayirathil Oruvan. Both Karthi’s
and Tamannah’s costumes are well chosen. After
almost 8 years, Lingusamy has tried to give another
‘RUN’ and has failed miserably in the
attempt. Right from the word go, the movie tries to
emulate ‘RUN’. Only that the Pulsar has
been replaced by a Lancer, the Tata Sumos by Scorpios,
Atul Kulkarni by Milind Soman and finally Madhavan
and Meera by Karthi and Tamannah respectively.
The bunch of Bangalore guys who are supposed friends
of Shiva hardly perform their intended task- humor.
If you are the type who would search for logic in
a movie, then your search would never end in this
movie. Among all the laws of Physics that has been
defied, Lingusamy has defied one big law that has
long been followed in Tamil cine industry –
that if a hero is beaten on the back of his head by
a rod, he should be knocked unconscious, no matter
how many people he can beat bare handed.
To summarize- except for the ‘Jean-wearing’
Karthi , glittering Tamannah and Yuvan’s scores,
you will be watching an attempted remake of ‘Run’
with larger-than-life fight sequences. I feel this
movie will be a dip in Lingusamy’s career graph.
