Vikram Kennedy Vinod Raj, the man from Ramanathapuram got a dream chance of doing a lead role in the film En Kadhal Kanmani only to end up in failure. Then, with Sridhar's Thanthu Vitten Ennai , P. C. Sriram's high expected Meera, veteran director S. P. Muthuraman's Kaaval Geetham made no difference to him but those films provided offers from Malayalam and Telugu industry only to act in supporting roles.
In 1993, miracle happened, Mani Ratnam signed Vikram for Bombay and he featured in photoshoots with Manisha Koirala. But Vikram was compelled to leave the project due continuity problems with another film. Then Vikram's career started to drop-off from lead role to supporting role. His uncle Thyagarajan was busy in making his son Prasanth as great hero. What else he could do, poor talented Vikram featured in supporting roles with Mamooty, Suresh Gopi, Jayaram in Malayalam industry and in Tamil with Ajith in Ullasam. Meanwhile he got some small budgets Telugu films which were not noteworthy.
Multistarrer films pudhiya mannargal though expected much, proved unsuccessful. Vikram justified his small role in Parthiban's Houseful. He was on verge of end of his cinema career. He rejected many TV serial offers. 32 year old Vikram was firm on his decision on ending his life only in cinema, whatever the role may be. Vikram dubbed voices for Prabhu Deva, Ajith Kumar and Abbas for Kaadhalan, Minsara Kanavu, Amaravathi, and Kandukondain Kandukondain. Vikram never thought it was disgrace to him instead he said it as "dignity of labor".
At that point of time, where there was no one to support him, a man named Bala (debutant director) signed him for Sethu. Lady luck wasn't in favor of Vikram during that time too. The film initially struggled to find a distributor, later it turned out to be massive hit and turning point of his struggling career. The critics changed colors like chameleon and praised Vikram for performance, which earned him few awards. There after fans went on to call him as "chiyaan"
One may think it’s all settled for Vikram, no it wasn't. Couple of failure made him to go back to his struggling phase. Dharani's Dhil was welcomed by all generations and he proved Sethu wasn't fluke. After a commercial success, Vikram's masterpiece Kasi wasn't a success but made him a finest actor in India. One could only see a poor blind man in Kasi, surely not Vikram.
Gemini, Dhool, Saamy were biggest success for Vikram but his graph wasn't straight, then and there he gave some failures like King, Kadhal sadugudu, samurai. Vikram became spotlight in Indian film industry with his spellbound performance in Bala's Pithamagan by winning national award. If Kasi was Vikram's masterpiece then a new word should be made for his performance in Pithamagan .
Chiyaan joined hands with Shankar and gave blockbuster film Anniyan. Vikram was applauded for his acting in climax and this film gained him many fans all over India, especially in TN. Then he featured in majaa, bheema, kanthasaamy, raavanan (raavan in Hindi), thaandavam in which he was praised for acting but the film didn't made much success.
After raavan Vikram was with handful of offers from Bollywood but, he rejected for Tamil audience. Devaithirumagal, though a copy from Hollywood it is very hard to find any actor justifying that role other than Vikram.
And apart from acting chiyaan sung many songs under Bharathwaj, DSP, GVP, Yuvan which are notable.
Earlier Vikram, after an accident was ensured by doctors that he won't even walk, but made a new meaning for acting. His passion and hard work towards his acting is unquestionable.
Till now Vikram is the only actor respected and accepted by fans of other actors. Tamil film industry which is traveling in commercial path needs actors like Vikram to revive the power of Tamil cinema to the world. In India there may be many better heroes than Vikram but it is very arduous to find better actors than Vikram.
