Your
first reaction soon as you exit the theatre
after watching NMA is surprise. Surprise
at how such a straight, simple film manages
to make you laugh, cry, push you to the
edge of your seat and also leave your
mind disturbed by taking up a simple subject,
not something which has not been dealt
with before, but narrating it with such
a telling impact that you end up getting
much much more than what the price of
your ticket might suggest. But, the surprise
doesn't end there.
Jeeva(Karthi) is a young man from the
lower middle class family, yes you guessed
it, on the look out for a job. Just when
everything seems to be falling in place
for him trouble ensues in the form of
4 teenagers who happen to be psychotic
drug and sex addicts. What follows is
a gripping cat and mouse game, culminating
into a riveting climax which will no doubt
go down in the history books as one of
tamil cinema's boldest and bloodiest.
Another surprise is the insanely mercurial
growth of Karthi as an actor. Is this
guy seriously just four films old? His
playful antics in the rather light hearted
first half and the play of emotions in
his eyes during the dark and disturbing
second half are an absolute treat to watch.
Not to forget the sizzling chemistry he
shares with the drop dead gorgeous Kajal
Aggarwal who also does her bit convincingly.

Where
the director really succeeds is by making the characters
so down to earth and easy to relate to that you manage
to slip into their daily lives very easily. Plus the
narration rarely ever sags, so much so that you actually
get irritated when "intermission" card comes
up. Now how often can you say that?
You can't help but wonder why we do not see such healthy
situational humour more often on screen.
Yuvan's work in this film is in one word "phenomenal".
What with the beautifully picturised songs already
having become a rage it is so very easy to overlook
what a big part his background score plays in taking
the movie forward, especially during the last 45 minutes
or so. Brilliant!
Probably the biggest surprise of them all is director
Suseenthiran. Coming on the back of a critical and
commercial success like "Vennila kabadi kuzhu"
the man exceeds your expectations in every possible
way with his latest flick. Let us hope he is here
to stay!!
VERDICT:- MUST SEE. PERIOD.
