WILL AUDIENCE ACCEPT SMART AND INNOVATIVE FILMS?

Last week Christopher Nolan’s Inception beats three new Hindi films to claim No 1 position in Indian box office. This is not the first time a Hollywood movie ruling Indian films. But Inception is not a comic/TV show adaptation. It’s neither a sequel nor a reboot. And it’s also not a 3D film. Given the complex and original story of the film, it was an incredible achievement. Lamhaa, which is one of the three Hindi films released along with inception, has a huge cast (starring Sanjay Dutt and Bipasha Basu) and it is released worldwide. For the past several months, a string of Hollywood films (Avatar, Toy story 3, Clash of titans, Alice in wonderland, Robinhood, Iron man 2, Karate kid) did well in India. Even domestically lame movies like Knight and day, Prince of Persia did great business.

Ok, let’s comeback to Tamil cinema. Usually Tamil films are not affected by the release of Hollywood films. But I will not be surprised if a Hollywood movie beats Tamil movies in coming years. The problem is with our movies, which was mostly spoiled in the name of entertainment (we affectionately calling as masala movies). Almost all A-list actors prefer masala movies, because it is considered as a safe bet, a sure hit (at least in box office returns).

I watched inception (twice), it is something spectacular, mind bending blockbuster. There are so many interpretations for this movie. So many discussions, lot of things to question and explanations. Totally, it was more than just a film.

Endhiran

Every time when we compare Hollywood movies with Tamil movies, there are two strong reasons.

1. Not enough money to meet technical supports (production budget).
2. Audiences are not intelligent.

It’s not acceptable to say money as a reason. Not anymore. Mr. Nolan, the director of inception has achieved the same feat with small budget films (watch Memento and prestige). There are also many great Hollywood films which have production costs much less than our top actor’s films. It is surprising that our directors have not even tried a science – fiction film. We completely lack a genre of films. Tamil directors are making a lot of real life stories in recent times. But we seriously have a drought of innovative films.

The film Ghajini was a remake of Hollywood film Memento. Mr. Murugadoss deleted all the intelligent scenes in Memento (which makes one of the greatest films in Hollywood history) and replaced it with songs and fight sequences. For what it should have been a groundbreaking film, sadly because of addition of masala elements it becomes just another action blockbuster. The obvious reason is director and producer should have been doubtful over intelligence of audience. But with the overwhelming response of the audience for the film inception clearly indicates that they are ready to welcome new and innovative concepts with both hands.

Don’t take it as a negative point. Instead the directors should take it is a sign, a calling card by the audience to make films in a new perspective. We are desperate to see some thoughtful Tamil films.

Good news is Endhiran. One of the grandest director in India and our superstar joined hands for the second time for this movie. Though it will not be a typical science – fiction film, I hope it will be a different experience for a Tamil movie. With the success of Endhiran (it seems to be), directors should be encouraged to bring something different on the screen.

Finally, audiences are ready for a change in Tamil cinema……the question is will directors deliver? Let’s hope for the best.
