Well what happens when India's biggest
Superstar joins forces with one of the
most creative directors of India on
his most ambitious motion picture project
till date? A critic-proof product, never
before seen mass hysteria and pandemonium
at the box office, obviously. More importantly
though it marks the dawn of an era,
where Indian cinema has finally begun
to show the world some of its muscle,
as director Shankar has come up with
a startlingly ingenious product, which
Rajnikanth ably carries on his shoulders
with an incredible performance - a breathtaking
juggling act!!!
When Dr.Vaseegaran(Rajnikanth),a genius
inventor, decides to implant human emotions
into his Robot(Rajnikanth again - a
true superhero, with the mental and
physical capability of a hundred men
put together) for him to be allowed
to join the armed forces, the last thing
he expects is for the Robot to fall
for his Fiance Sana(Aishwarya Rai).
An enraged Vaseegaran then dismantles
and disposes him off only for him to
fall in the wrong hands, paving way
for the film to take off into a different
level altogether and touch new creative
highs, which might even make some of
the highest minds in hollywood land
turn green with envy.
All the cat calls, howling and cheering
when Rajni appears on screen die down
soon enough as he sacrifices his trademark
mannerisms and style for the sake of
the script and decides to play by Shankar's
rules, also showing what a great actor

he is in the process. His robotic mannerisms characterised
by some apt underplay are a stark contrast to Vaseegaran's
short tempered outbursts. In fact Vaseegaran is
not like any character Rajni has portrayed in the
past couple of decades for he is flawed, so human,
just like you and me, so much so that you have to
remind yourself that you are watching a Rajnikanth
film.
However all this is only until the man enters the
boots of the villainous Robot hell bent on destroying
anything and anybody who dare stand between him
and his lady love. Rejoice all you die hard fans
of the superstar for this is where the the phenomenon
called Rajnikanth takes over and the director fades
into oblivion! Such arresting screen presence which
only a few in the world can boast of!! The audacity
and panache with which he pulls off that menacing
villain role just has to be seen to be believed!!
The last 45 minutes totally belong to him! As the
atmosphere in the theatre turns electric the man
simply BURNS the screen down!!! WOW!!!!!
Despite having almost everything you can possibly
ask for from a motion picture the film does have
its flaws. For example the ice on which the relationship
of Vaseegaran and Sana is based on is too thin to
hold too strong, plus the songs, though magnificently
brought alive on screen(capturing Shankar's love
for grandeur in all it's glory) interrupt the flow
of proceedings no end.
Performances wise enough has been said about Rajni
and Aishwarya Rai's role, though meatier than the
one of your average heroine in Indian Cinema demands
very little of her except look good. Technically
the movie is Indian Cinema's biggest achievement,
by some distance, as the CG is on par with any Sci
Fic blockbuster Hollywood has churned out over the
years. Rahman's songs and background score fall
short by his own dizzying high standards but add
that extra value to the film nevertheless.
Everything said and done chances are very bleak
that you would even dream of missing this mammoth
achievement, definitely the biggest in India's movie
history, so this might just add fuel to your desire
to catch it sooner which is not a half bad thing
to happen considering the fact that since you simply
cannot outrun/ignore this phenomenon.
VERDICT - WITH AN EXPERT TEAM IN TOW THE SUPERSTAR
LEADS INDIAN CINEMA TO THE WORLD!
