It's
the audiences' decision! |

|
In
recent years I can't help but
notice that some films are overrated,
and some are overrated. In my
mind I think Vaaranam Aayiram
and Dasavatharam are the best
films of the year. Vijay and
Ajith's old movies were excellent.
But these days it seems that
they stick to the concepts that
have made them stars. Look at
Vijay's last 4 films: Aathi,
Pokkiri, Azhagiya ThamizhMagan,
and Kuruvi. Pokkiri is the only
movie out of the 4 to get blockbuster
status. Why? Because the concept
that Prabhudeva gave was old,
but with a new twist! If you
look at the other 3, those films
literally weren't packaged the
same way. The audience picked
the good movie.
Then look at Ajith's 2007 film
year. 3 releases: Alwar, Kireedom,
and Billa. Billa was the biggest
success, because it was Hollywood
like. Tamil audiences don't
really see that often. The audience
yet again picked the good movie.
If we look at the past of those
two actors, the best films they
had done had run over 100 days.
Only a few didn't. We don't
want to see the same story over
and over again, do we? 2008
has been a bad year for many
reasons. The quality films are
taking longer to shoot and to
complete. The usual run of the
mill films can be shot and completed
fast, so they can release in
a bundle. I remember when I
read an article about a conflict
that Gautham Menon and Perarasu
had. Menon said that Perarasu's
films were the usual run of
the mill films and that his
film's were better. Perarasu
then said that he didn't need
to watch Hollywood or Middle
Eastern films to understand
how to make a good film, because
he's making films for the "mass."

Who exactly won in this battle?
Look at the box office returns
and public opinion. By far,
if they were to be compared,
Gautham's Vaaranam Aayiram
has beaten Perarasu's Pazhani
by a long shot, both box office
and opinion wise. I think
the audience knows what's
going to be a good movie these
days. I live in Canada, and
being a big fan of films,
I usually go watch good films.
I went to the theatres to
see Vaaranam Aayiram and Dasavatharam,
because I knew I wouldn't
be disappointed. A film's
fate relies on the audience,
not the stars. Because even
newcomers can beat biggies
in the box office. Just ask
the directors of Saroja, Subramaniumpuram,
Anjathey, Jeyamkondaan, and
Pirivom Santhipom. These films
beat out Kuruvi, Aegan, Kuselan,
Bheema, Kaalai, and Sathyam.
It goes to show you that the
person giving the money for
the ticket is the person that
decides if it's a good or
bad film!
