Angadi Theru - Not Extraordinary! Well after some fantastic movies like Paruthiveeran, Veyil etc I was fed up with back to back movies (small budget) releasing with village backdrops (quite same) and films which are 'meant' to be realistic, artistic and class. I had no hopes on Angadi Theru and thought once again a 'wannabe offbeat movie'. But I was wrong. Initially I went to Angadi Theru only for my favorite 'Katrathu Tamil' Anjali & 'KKK' fame 'Black' Pandi. Well the movie started with the childish behaviors of hero Lingu (Mahesh) & heroine Kani (Anjali) in the roadside followed by a gruesome accident. Then came the predictable flashback with Lingu's father's tragic death that paves him the way into Angadi Theru (Market Street) with his friend Maari (Black Pandi). There comes the day to day life of people working in shopping malls, textile stores & platform shops which made the movie interesting. Enters mischievous Kani (Anjali) getting beaten up by the supervisor Karungali (Venkatesh). The lifestyles of Lingu & Maari are quite disgusting. Rushing for food like Rajni & Goundamani rushing for Chinna Thambi movie tickets! Sleeping in bunches with no place left vacant. 'Love' between the leads roles starts as usual pulling each others leg. Whereas the 'new' thing here is that Lingu & Kani both get closer with their funny love failures. Maari too finds his angel Soffie which provides enough laughter. Meanwhile the cruel supervisor becomes the victim for the break up of another love jodi leading to the death of a girl. This causes an unnecessary fuss between Lingu & Kani. The story not only
Angadi Theru
shows the life of Lingu & co but also the life of other roadside people. A poor guy who earns money on his own by cleaning the public toilet and getting self-employed! An old blind man selling domestic items with determination! A physically challenged guy and his newly wed wife where the guy expects a healthy baby. But she in contrast expects and gives birth to a physically challenged baby the reason for it got a huge applause from the crowd. Lingu helps Kani in hard situations where Kani's sister who's a household maid attains puberty. Their bond gets stronger than ever. Sneha appears as 'Sneha' just to add some glamour to the movie. Nothing more! Finally Lingu & Kani's love gets exposed to the cruel supervisor and the owner. Lingu gets beaten up by police whereas Kani is sexually harassed. Lingu & Kani leave the store searching for jobs but join the old blind man selling domestic items. When everyone thinks 'all is well', comes a twist, the gory accident. Back to the starting! Lingu's leg badly hurt and sees his Kani without both the legs. Kani's father leaves her without notice. Kani is totally lost and expects Lingu to do the same as her father. But Lingu breaks the silence requesting Kani to marry him. This top-notch scene got the maximum applause from the crowd and forms the climax where both Lingu & Kani get back to their work selling domestic products in the roadside. Actors Mahesh, Anjali, 'Black' Pandi & Venkatesh did a marvelous job. The movie was very natural and well directed by Vasanthabalan. Screenplay was very good. Editing was decent by Sreekar Prasad. Cinematography by Richard was class! Music by G.V.Prakash Kumar & Vijay Antony was not path breaking but did justice to the movie. Overall - 4.5/5 for Angadi Theru which would surely make people who visits market places stand for a second and feel what 'they' feel!
