Music Review : Oru Kalluriyin Kathai

Yuvan Shankar has again come up with some beautiful melodies. The songs are simply superb. The film has got Arya and Sonia Agarwal in the peak roles. The debutant director Nanda Periyaswamy has directed the movie and the movie is produced by Chozha Creations.

Yuvan had some rock breaking music in his recent movies. Especially 7G, Rainbow Colony, Manmadhan, Ram, Arindhum Ariyalum all made sparkles in the music world. Though, Daas didn’t do the expected business (in cassette sales), still this movie would surely hit the charts

1) Kangal Kalangida: (Karthik)
A fast song! The song glorifies the memories of the students in their college life. Karthik has sung the song and his voice is heaving with liveliness. The music flows unvaryingly in the song with not so much of ups and downs. The lyrics are also good, especially while exalting the friendship. The beat which occurs throughout the song is fantastic.
Rating: 7/10.

2) Geetha Mala: (Devan, Ranjith, Soundar Rajan)
A youthful song! The song starts as if it is going to be a gana song and then suddenly changes to little bit of westernization and then again comes back to gana style. It is a fantastic thinking by Yuvan. The voices of all three singers are apt for this particular song. This particular number would be a boon for theatre dancers.
Rating: 7.5/10

3) Kadhal Enbathu: (Harish Ragavendra, Chinmayi)
A duet song! As, the song is a duet kind of genre, Yuvan has gone with a super combo -Harish and Chinmayi. The song has little bit traces of Vayadha Vayadha song of Thulluvatho Illamai. But still the voices of the singers have added the elegance to this number. There is nothing to say about lyrics. The orchestration for the song must have been still better.
Rating: 6.5/10

4) Dhallapa Kattuda: (Sriram)
A racy song! The most outstanding song of the album. The initiative given to the lyric is something unusual and it has worked out very well. Regarding, Yuvan’s composition, he has come out with his preeminent in this meticulous song. Sriram’s voice is matchless and the pronunciation used is something peculiar.
Rating: 9/10

5) Kangal Kandadthu: (K.K., Sujatha)
A song glorifying friendship! The wordings of the song are very sentimental and it has been penned beautifully with a different kind of song for K.K’s voice. Though, he has done his job to the best, Sujatha too, perfectly matches for the song. Only a little bit of wordings have changed compared to the first song, but the tune is the same.
Rating: 7/10

6) Unaku Endru Oruthi: (Unni Menon, Chorus)
A tit-bit song! The song just runs for one minute but it will remain in your hearts for a long time. Yuvan has again come out very well with this kind of songs. It has got an attention grabbing tune in the midst of Unni Menon’s voice. The chorus tone runs consistently and they have done their job to the maximum level possible.
Rating: 8.5/10

7) Kangal Kandadhu: (Ranjith, Ganga)
The same song as mentioned above but with different singers.
Rating: 7/10

8) Pangu Podhu: (K.K., Ranjith)
A gana song! The tune might remind you of the early 80’s that is during Yuvan’s father reign, as one of the fast glowing and an enjoyable song for the youths. It is Ranjith’s third song in the album and in addition, K.K’s voice has added to the glam sham of this song. The lyrics are extremely appealing and goes incredibly well with the rhythm
Rating: 7.5/10

Overall Rating:
Overall, the album has a mix of soft and fast beat songs in Yuvan’s style. The fast songs might encompass a great welcome among the audience. A great collection for a story, illuminating college life, as the title says.
Overall Rating: 7.5/10
