There is this mirage that only films with big budgets
run at the box office. To negate this contention, we
have examples of several films which were made in medium
or shoestring budget and won rave reviews. For a film
to succeed, the main ingredient is a strong story. The
story should be narrated in an interesting manner. A
gripping screenplay is required. Once the actors and
actresses understand the characters well and portray
accordingly, the film is assured of a hit run. Therefore,
it is not necessary that we should have big stars or
huge sum of money to make films. In fact, it has been
proven that the high costs of films these days are due
to the hefty payments to the stars. In the past year,
we had Kadhal which was produced by director Shankar.
This film was directed by Balaji Sakthivel. It had newcomers
in the
lead cast. The story was that of the pitfalls that adolescent
love encounters. It dealt with the sensitive issue in
a forthright manner. The entire crew has to be lauded
for the impressive product. No wonder the film became
a hit. Similarly, we have another short film titled
377. This film has been made by a group of Visual Communication
students. These boys and girls have a strong conviction
that good films will be appreciated by the audience
irrespective of the budget. For example, 377 is the
investigative story of a series of mysterious incidents
in which 10 boys went missing one after another. It
runs for 90 minutes. The crew is entirely made up of
students and the film has been shot in familiar locations.
So, the cost is minimum. Breaking away from the tradition
that students make only documentaries and short films,
these students have made a feature length film. It will
soon hit theaters after the digital version is ready.
They are very sure that the viewers will give the film
a positive response.
Therefore,
it is quite clear that cinema is a medium to tell a
good story. As long as the producers and directors have
a convincing script and narrate it in an acceptable
manner, films need not cost the earth to make.
