The ball is not in Dhanush’s court for some time, the two successive failures of his films have decreased his popularity to a high extent. Now he has come up with the film Devathaiyai Kandaen, which had a lukewarm opening. Having gained some experience in the cine field, Dhanush is still not right in his selection of films.

The story of the film goes as this… Babu (Dhanush) is a fun-loving young man who works at the teashop of ‘Bayilvaan’ Ranganathan. He is asked to supply tea at a local college and the inevitable romance between Uma (Sridevi) and Babu blossoms.

Uma is a very practical girl who doesn’t allow her heart to rule her head. Falling in  love  with  a tea  vendor  could suit the infatuated

young mind but when it comes to marriage she is able to visualize the problems that may come and therefore gets out of the affair. She then accepts the doctor groom (Kunal) whom her parents find for her.

Babu is frustrated by this action of Uma, and he tries to commit suicide but fails, gets arrested and produced before the court where he blames Uma for his present condition. A court scene takes place and Dhanush has set a trend in taking his disappointment to court. The climax of the story is whether Uma realizes her mistake and marries Babu or not.

Karuna’s comedy track is sometimes irritating and he should be more innovative in the future to survive in the field. Mayilsamy and Sathyan have also done their part in the comedy sequences.

The title music is familiar but appealing. Deva is the composer. The item numbers, not one but two have taken place in this film.

Dhanush is too loud and immature in the early scenes. But once matters get serious, his performance is appealing. There is less amount of punch dialogues in the film unlike the the previous Dhanush’s film, Sullan. Dhanush’s arguments in court make an impression in the minds of the audience.

Bhoopathi Pandiyan, debutant director of the film, Devathaiyai Kandaen has not used the opportunity given to him well. This film is produced by Roja Combines. The others in the cast are Sridevi, Nassar, and Rajeev.
