The
story revolves around Vikram who has played
multiple roles for the first time in his career.
He plays a lawyer called Ambi and has brought
freshness to the portrayal of the community
with which we commonly associate the name.
He is an idealistic lawyer who wants to end
the anti-social elements in the society. However,
he is not alone in his quest. Unknown to him,
another character (Vikram again) accomplishes
the mission with ease. Prakashraj plays the
police officer hot on the heels of the terminator.
Vivek is his assistant. Although the story
is somewhat Spiderman-like, what distinguishes
the film is the immense dedication with which
the team has worked. This is reflected in
the screenplay and Shankar is a great story-teller.
After the failure of Boyz, he must be a chastened
man and has stuck to what he does best –
neat entertainment without preaching.
Shankar’s
movies are full of interesting characters.
Anniyan is no different. There is an entire
team of heavyweights in the cast. Nedumudi
Venu plays Vikram’s father and Nasser
is a psychiatrist. Kalabavan Mani is the perfect
foil for Vivek’s comedy track. About
the ladies there is not much. Sadha who played
a simple belle in Jeyam is the sophisticated
heroine while supermodel Yana Gupta makes
an item number appearance.
The
best technicians have been roped in. Ravi
Varman and Manikandan are the cinematographers
while V.T. Vijayan is the editor. Raju Sundaram,
Kalyan and Ahmed Khan are the dance masters
while Peter Hayne is the action choreographer.
Harris Jayaraj has scored the music and there
is no doubt that it is another chart-topping
offering from him going by the audio sales.
Vairamuthu, Na. Muthukumar and Kabilan have
penned the lyrics while story, screenplay,
dialogue and direction are by Shankar. The
film has been produced by Ravichandran and
Ramesh Babu for Oscar Films.
Trade
reports talk in awe of the lavish cost of
the project which was the first in the industry
to get institutional finance from IDBI. It
has followed corporate operational model resulting
in optimum utilization of funds.
There
is much at stake for Ravichandran, Vikram
and Shankar. As the curtains go up tomorrow,
one of the important chapters of contemporary
Tamil cinema history will be chalked out.
