Thanu:
Senior talks about junior
Kalaipuli Thanu is shuttling between Kodambakkam
and Chengalpattu at a frantic pace, handling
the production of Sakkarakatti and Kanthaswamy.
It was only during lunch time that one could
get a few moments from him for his opinion on
Sakkarakatti.

Q:
You are one who has done films with
established stars, friends and ones
close to you. When Kala Prabhu came
to you with the story of Sakkarakatti
what prompted you to give him the chance
to debut as a director?
This
is not a question that you should have
asked me, but I will tell you what Bhagyaraj
told when he was asked why he allowed
his son to debut in this movie when
he originally had plans of launching
his Shanthanu under someone like Mani
Ratnam or Shankar. He had told that
the story had impressed him so much
that he had no doubts about sending
Shanthanu for a debut under another
debutant. Realizing 10 per cent of the
story’s potential was good enough,
thought Bhagyaraj, but after seeing
the final cut he has said that the movie
has come out ten times better than he
expected. He had been able to see that
Kala Prabhu was immensely talented when
he had narrated the story of Sakkarakatti
for the first time. After seeing Sakkarakatti’s
dubbing positive, three big producers
have approached Kala Prabhu to do a
film for them.

More surprising is the involvement that A.R. Rahman
showed in the movie, the level was something that
he has not shown in some of my bigger movies.
Usually, he doesn’t bring his mother along
for audio launch functions. But he brought her
with him for Sakkarakatti, there must have been
something special. Rahman had got the chance to
see the videos of just two songs; the others had
not been shot then. After seeing those two songs,
he called me up and told me to take the same amount
of care in shooting the rest of the songs; he
was hugely impressed with what he had seen. What
more, he even recommended some of his friends
to come and watch the videos to learn how a song
should be shot. This is a great honor, especially
because it came from a man of Rahman’s stature.
It is Srinivasamurthy who has done the re-recording.
He said that he has the habit of fast forwarding
the scenes, which do not require any recording
work, but for Sakkarakatti he was never inclined
to do so. All credit for that goes to the screenplay.
After that long and very detailed answer, a very
short question:
|
|
|
|
Q: How
have the dialogues turned out?
Even I
was taken aback by the originality of
the dialogues. I wondered about how
a boy so quiet, with not many friends,
could get such ideas. The movie is going
to be liked by all, not only by the
youth. There are not many movies that
parents can watch along with their children,
but this one will be one that the entire
family can watch. The romantic scenes
have been shot very beautifully.
And, one
final question…..
Q.
Will Kala Prabu enter politics?
(Looks
shocked)…… Even I don’t
have the slightest idea of doing so,
why would he want to?

A
father who is mightily impressed by his son’s
work, will the audience uphold the father’s
faith.
