Srikanth
seems to easily slip into any role. We saw him first
as a sensitive romantic hero, and now suddenly he’s
raging across the screen. Few actors can go from being
gentle to indignant (notice how fierce his face turns
in these fiery scenes) playing the same character. Behindwoods
caught up with this promising romantic lead turned action
star to learn what he has in the pipeline for us, and
if he will ever return to love stories. |

“Indravizla
will change everything for Namitha”

BW: Your upcoming
film is Indravizha with Namitha?
Srikanth: Namitha
is very popular nowadays in Tamil cinema,
I need not tell you about that. Indravizha
will give Namitha scope to perform and not
just use her glamour quotient. This is what
she has been waiting for. Besides, I share
a great rapport with her, both as a colleague
and as a friend. So, when we work together,
we expect the results to be good.
Is Namitha’s
glamour a reason for your film’s success?
I don’t
believe that glamour alone can make a film
successful, the entire product has to be good.
Even if you take the case of Indravizha, there
is no scope for glamour without reason, the
movie is driven by performances. Outside these
factors, if glamour does help in the overall
success of a movie, it is good. (Laughs).

Your wife as
your costume designer.
First, let me
state that this is a rumor that I have come
across lately. My wife does have a say in the
clothes that I wear, but that’s only at
home, not in my movies and I don’t think
that she has any such idea at present. Currently,
designer Ravi takes care of my costumes, sometimes
the directors get involved or other designers
are sought from outside.
How are your
films in Telugu doing?
I am actually
doing 3 Telugu films at the moment.

“Poo
will be a love story devoid of action”

Any recent
Tamil films that you have been impressed with?
I have been
out of station shooting for my Telugu films
for the past 3 or 4 months and so have missed
out on a number of Tamil films. I have actually
been watching quite a few Telugu films. But
after coming back I have seen Kuruvi which
I liked a lot, the Vijay-Dharani combination
is always good. I also want to watch Santhosh
Subramaniam.
Why the sudden
transition from romance to action?
I will get back
to romance soon. There is always a tendency
to do something new and different. That’s
why I decided to try my hand at action and
comedy subjects when I was doing romantic
movies regularly. But, the movies that I am
doing now are romantic. Indravizha is a romantic
triangle with an element of thrill, Poo will
be a love story devoid of action. And there
is a project with S.D. Saba which will be
a breezy entertainer. The only action film
I am doing at the moment is in Telugu, Police
Police under Chella Manmohan’s direction.

How did you
accept Rajeswar’s film?
Actually, I had
not yet met Rajeswar sir before I accepted the
offer. It was the producer who approached me
with the idea. I accepted the offer because
I have watched his work before and have been
impressed with what he has done. I would really
like to work with a technician like him.
How is your
rapport with Karu Pazhaniappan?
Karu Pazhaniappan
is one of my close friends in the industry.
I take his opinion on lots of matters outside
films. He is a very straightforward person,
a very nice friend and someone you can place
your trust in. We have done two films, Parthipan
Kanavu –which was a hit -and now Sathurangam.
It is sad that Sathurangam is yet to see the
light of the day. The movie has the hard work
and sacrifice of many people behind it. Some
people who have seen the movie and liked it
are working very hard to get it released and
I believe that will happen in a couple of months.

Does your
brother help with your career?
I have received good support
from my family to pursue my ambition, but my brother
does not have any movie ambitions. There is no one in
my family or close friends circle who are in films.
I am a self made man and prefer to be that way. I don’t
want to depend on anyone. Today Tamil cinema is in a
very healthy state, there are a number of producers.
There was a time when producers were few, but in the
five years that I have been in the industry a lot of
things have changed. Producers are plenty, the only
thing we need are good stories.
Are you still willing
to do double hero subjects.
Why not, in fact I am
doing one in Telugu again where me and Prithviraj are
doing something similar to Kana Kanden. Even in Tamil
I am doing a film where Aravind has equal importance.
You can call Poo a heroine oriented subject. Even Parthiban
Kanavu had the heroine doing a double role. As long
as the story is good and I have scope to perform there
is no objection in sharing screen space.
What’s your take
on the new trend of makeovers?
I am definitely not against
makeovers or different get-ups, but the story should
demand it. In fact, I and Sasi sir got together first
to execute that kind of a project, but ECR was a disappointment.
Then I waited for a year, growing my hair and beard
for the next movie which unfortunately did not take
off. Now, in Poo, I have gone in for a bit of a change.
But it is strictly what is demanded by the story and
not anything drastic.

“If
I single out one heroine, others might get upset”
|
|
There is news
that you are going to work with Fazil again.
I have not heard
anything to that effect and have not received
any such offer. I am happy to have worked
with him before. He is a director who has
given many actors a big break and that’s
why I worked with him. I learnt a lot from
him, especially how to emote with eyes, he
was very patient with me. Definitely one of
the best directors I have acted for.
Which heroine
have you felt comfortable working with?
Can’t
single out one person, others might get upset.
I have felt comfortable with all the heroines
I have worked with. I want to work with heroines
with whom I have not yet shared screen space.
Tamil heroines are really doing well nowadays,
Nayanthara, Shriya, Trisha, Asin, Priyamani
etc…
