Brought up in London, Jai Akash began his career with Rojavanam, He shifted to Telugu films where he found relatively good acceptance but his yearning for Tamil films took him back to Kodambakkam. He played the lead in Inidhu Inidhu Kaadhal Inidhu opposite Neha and produced by Ramoji Rao. Now after Ramakrishna, he was seen in a lot of films like Sevvel, Amudhae, and Gurudeva etc. Still waiting for the correct break, a chat with the rising star.

How was it doing Amudhae?

When I saw Ezhil sir’s Thullatha Manamum Thullum I liked it very much. I enjoyed and watched it many times. I used to act and dance for the Meghamay Vanthu Pogiren song. Due t o that I had a special respect for him and wanted o do a movie under him. Then he was invited to view the preview of Ramakrishna. On seeing the film while coming out he called me and told that I had acted very well. He said the character I did was portrayed as if done by an experienced artist. Later he gave me the offer to do Amudhae. Instead of doing same type of characters, Amudhae was very different in story and character to me. I did a rowdy role in Gurudeva, revenge taking lawyer in Sevvel, a guy with stammering problem in Katrullah Varai. And in that line will follow Amudhae. Ezhil sir worked very hard to make Amudhae a hit. He allowed me to act freely. Most of the scenes I did in this movie were shot in a single take.

Who’s your inspiration for acting?

We have all the characteristics inside us. I believe that it is more than enough if we bring it out and do it properly. We can learn good things from anyone. When I was explained about the rowdy character in Gurudeva, I was reminded about Parthiban sir’s Puthiya Padhai. As comedy, action, sentiment etc. was also needed for that character I saw films like Ulley Veliye, Sattam En Kaiyil and understood how the heroes had done the character, did some homework over it and only then acted the role. For two days I found it difficult to get into the character but after two days, with director Jafer’s help found it easy. As the movie was made in both Tamil and Telugu I did both of them. In Tamil I spoke I the chindadripet style and in Telugu used the local Hyderabad style in Telugu. Everyone who saw the movie appreciated my performance.

There seems to be 1 movie of yours coming out every month. What’s the reason behind this? Do you fund these films?

My father is a business in London. He was caught in a fix trying to help some people. He was caught in debt worth in crores. At that time only I came into cinema. I had to earn and clear the debts. When the situation is like this how can I financially help my movies? K. Balachander gave me a chance in Rojavanam produced under his banner. I got Rs. 10000 as salary for that movie. Having acted in his banner I got fame and also an offer from the Telugu field. I got the offer to do Anantham under Ramoji rao sir’s production. That film was a mega hit there.Due to that there was an expectation for me .After that I did ten films and settled all my father’s debts. Ramakrishna created a lot of problems for the producer Sivasakthi Pandian sir. Due to that the release was delayed. As a result I helped the film to release financially from the revenue I got from other movies. Otherwise I haven’t helped any other movie.

When are you going to tie the wedding knot?

I will marry but not now. It will be an arranged marriage only. Before that I want to reach a stable state in Tamil cinema. Only then will I marry.

There seems to be lots of gossip coming about you…?

There is no excitement if there are no gossips in life. As this is cinema it seems to be highlighted. I have the habit of speaking freely with everyone. I did a movie with Sada in Telugu, which made the media link us both. Now they are linking me with Pranathy who acted with me in Gurudeva. It is true that I recommended her for Katrullah Varai. The reason is that Gurudeva which was released as Guru in Telugu was a hit. So I thought we could use that popularity here too. Otherwise I don’t bother about gossip. In one sense it too is publicity only. I will be sad when it affects the concerned actresses.
