First
a musical and now a psychological
thriller - Farhan Akthar is
donning roles a many. Karthik
calling Karthik is one of the
much-awaited Hindi movies directed
by Vijay Lalwani. Apart from
acting in the lead, Farhan is
also one of the producers of
the movie. Shankar, Ehsaan and
Loy have composed the music
for this movie.
Hey Ya...
Vocals: Shankar,
Loy and Clinton Cerejo
Hey Ya begins is a hinglish
song beginning with English
lyrics. A very simple straight
song - no big experiments and
no different tunes, but the
lyrics and the soft tune grows
on you. All credit to Javed
for the good lyrics. This song
should be work mostly with those
in love.
Uff Teri Ada...
Vocals: Shankar, Alyssa
Mendonsa
The song begins with Shankar
at the helm capturing interest
with his mesmerizing voice.
Little slow when it

starts
but picks up pace as it goes along. Like
the traditional Shankar-Ehsaan- Loy music,
this one has a mix of rock and Indian music.
Although there’s a little bit of beat
here and there, the song is still slow and
soft. And the way Shankar says Sahiba reminds
you of his album nine.
Jaane Ye Kya Hua...
Vocals: KK.
When it’s KK you cannot but like the
song. He has done what he does best –
added magic to the ballad. Soulful rendition
– everybody would agree. The tunes
are very simple but very pleasant to hear.
And importance has been given to the vocals
rather than the instruments which KK has
capitalized. You may want to hear the song
again and again.
Kaisi Hai Ye Udaasi...
Vocals: Kailash Kher and
Sukanya Purayastha
The song beginning with the beautiful tunes
on the flute not only sets the mood but
also calms the mind. Kailash has turned
a mellow number into a heart warming one
with his voice and feel. Sukanya, who joins
him, is also very impressive. Yet another
soft song but intense song in the movie…
Karthik
Calling Karthik...
Vocals: Shankar
Mahadevan, Caralisa Monteiro, Malika Singh
and Suraj Jaggan
The title song of the movie is quite impressive.
However, this song reminds me of songs from
Colonial Cousins and another Tamil song
called Anbe Sivam from a Kamal Haasan’s
movie. The tune is quite OK but the dialogues
in between get very irritating after a while.
Like it’s the tradition with the Hindi
music directors today, there are four songs
that have been remixed. I guess it’s
an obsession or rather a compulsion.
Finally, the music livens with Karthik 2.0.
Composed by Midival Punditz and Karsh Kale,
this tune is much better than the earlier
title track. This also suits the subject,
one would say. Very good rhythm and tune
on the guitar. Makes you finally sit up
and want to listen.
The next remix of Karthik calling Karthik,
again composed by Midival Punditz and Karsh
Kale, is not quite necessary but certainly
sounds better than the original.
Remix of Hey Ya and Uff Teri Ada are also
quite unnecessary for that fact so are all
the remixes of today. The tunes are just
fast with beats thrown in here and there.
However, the remix version of both the songs
is much much better than the original. What
makes me sit up and wonder is that why can’t
people just do with original and save the
remix as only version.
Verdict:
One would wonder why so many soft melodies
for a thriller. If you expected fast-pace
numbers, you are in for a great disappointment.
One only hopes that at least the rerecording
and background score will add some life
to the movie because the songs fail to do
that. The other surprising factor is that
Javed Akthar has done a very mediocre job
with the lyrics, which is so unlike him.
The songs are not great to listen to but
will pass for the moment.
