From
the glamorous inauguration by Katrina Kaif and
the release of the FICCI - KPMG report by the
Honorable Chief Minister of Maharashtra Mr.
Ashok Shankarrao Chavan to the spectacular finale
of day 1 with dance performance by the India
Got Talent finalists - The Prince Group and
the Fashion show, the first day had been grand
to say the least.
And here are the major highlights of Day 1.
- Piracy still continued to be the major discussing
factor and Yash Chopra’s plea for passing
the Gunda Act immediately got an affirmative
response from Ashok Chavan.
- 'My Name is Khan' became the most discussed
film in the event being the biggest revenue
earner overseas and for the fact that Karan
Johar sitting on the dais for two sessions and
Shah Rukh Khan in one. Followed by 3 Idiots.
- Shah Rukh called marketing of films as a science
and asked the Indian film industry to follow
the path and techniques of our intelligent and
experienced cousin - Hollywood. He rubbished
the very genre of crossover films as he said
there is no such thing. This, in fact, contradicted
the very next session which was about crossover
films moderated by his friend Karan Johar.
- The session - 'INDIAN FILMS GOING GLOBAL:
CAN OUR FILMS REALLY CROSSOVER?' slowly turned
out to be the clash of My Name is Khan and Firaaq
and according to Vijay Singh, CEO, Fox Star
Studios India 'My Name is Khan' has already
grossed over US$ 21 million till now in the
overseas market.
- The session also discussed about the need
for star system and the need for a strong screenplay.
Nandita Das, the director of Firaaq, explained
the need for the filmmakers’ belief on
a subject to be properly mirrored by the distributor
and exhibitor for a movie to crossover successfully
- The session - 'BIG BUDGETS AND BIGGER FLOPS:
WHAT AILS OUR MOVIES?' was very informative
and Ramesh Sippy's speech on the evolution of
movies from 'Sholay to Chandini Chowk to China'
became the highlight. Understanding the need
for the relevance to budget to content produced
was justified by a small grid they came up with
which said the content was the king irrespective
of the budget. The need for a star to support
a big Idea was also discussed by the speakers.
- And the final session on - SCRIPTWRITING by
Steven De Souza a renowned Hollywood scriptwriter
was well received by all.
Overall, day 1 had been a mix of content and
glamour with the second slightly getting an
upper-hand. |
