Raj Film's latest offering Lafangey Parindey
is released today amidst expectations.
Produced by the most reputed banner in
Bollywood, a promising lead pair in Neil
Nithin Mukesh and Deepika Padukone and
directed by a promising youngster, who
gave us Parineeta, this movie sure promises
a lot of potential. But, as is often the
case, rarely do movies appeal to the audience

same
way as they get hyped up before its release. LP is
no exception.
Lafengey Parindey (Rogues and Birds) is a typical
Bollywood movie set in the backstreets of Mumbai.
Taporis and tapori language is not new to us. If Munnabhai
glorified the 'bhai' culture, LP is just a bland and
amateurish take on it. Folded sleeves, bandanas on
the hands and speaking 'locha', 'yeda', 'karela' does
not make you a tapori. It makes you wonder why the
director chose to do an unattempted thing which requires
great attention to detail. Well, first things first.
What is LP all about?
No
prizes for guessing the rogue and the bird. One-shot
Nandu is the Lafanga who lives mysteriously in the
streets of Mumbai. Wonder if the director knows where
he actually stays. Nandu works for Usman Bhai and
is a fighter. It is another mystery why he fights
blind-folded in the ring while his opponents aren't.
And every time he fights, he gets bashed up by his
opponents and all Nandu has to do is to rise from
the ashes and give his counterpart ONE punch and he
wins. No wonder he is called One-shot Nandu. Though
he is beaten to death, he never shows signs of distress
or even a scratch on his body after the fight. Another
mystery. Well, the list continues.
Deepika is the Parinda. She works in a posh mall and
loves figure skating. Her dream is to be India's next
big talent - a dance show on TV and to win 50 lakh
rupees which is the first prize. Again the director
makes you wonder where she gets her fancy dresses
when she is brought up in such a humble environment.
When all is well, she loses her eye in an accident.
Will her dream become a reality? Will this blind Parinda
achieve her vision? You will find all the answers
to the questions in Pradeep Sarkar's Lafangey Parindey.
The movie starts with the introduction of Neil and
Deepika with interlacing scenes. Yuva style? The slight
reference stops right there. The screenplay becomes
predictable throughout. It is not such an engrossing
subject anyway. This is another romantic story, after
all, with the usual sacrifices, songs, friends and
the mandatory villain (though he doesn’t have
to do much in the movie). Add to this, a half-baked
investigation sequence with the "happy ending",
you have LP. The relief here is that the director
has not tried to make it a three-hour ordeal and has
kept it short to 135 minutes.
It is so disappointing to see a promising talent like
Pradeep Sarkar treading an unknown path. There are
so many questions in the movie that needs to be answered.
The screenplay is so conventional that it makes you
yawn more than once. The casting should have been
better too. Neil Nitin Mukesh is a total misfit in
the movie. Though he tries hard to be rough, his suave
looks never allow him to be a tapori. He is too sophisticated
to be one-shot Nandu. There is not one emotion that
makes us connect with him. Disappointing!
If there are two things in the movie which are worth
mentioning, they are Deepika and the choreography
for the skating sequences. Deepika, though not very
convincing, wins the vote of all viewers. She commands
the sympathy of the audience with her performance
as Pinky. She just passes with her blind character
as well. She looks every bit a figure skater with
amazing moves on skates. Kudos! A couple of songs
after the interval do sound nice and merge with the
movie. Otherwise the music is quite ordinary. The
choreography for the dance numbers, especially for
the skating has been handled very well. The camera
angles for these have been carefully dealt with. Other
technical departments have just done their job.
Lafangey Parindey is strictly for Deepika's die-hard
fans or if you are seriously out of ideas to spend
your weekend.
Verdict : Lafangey Parindey – A big
let down!
