Madhur
Bhandarkar's school of filmmaking
is quite different from what
others do. He tries to take
commercial and art cinema and
makes a cocktail out of it.
Some of his films like Fashion,
Corporate or Page 3 did impress.
And his ardent followers are
keenly awaiting the release
of his latest drama, Jail. Will
the National Award Panel's favorite
score once again?
Yet again Madhur Bhandarkar
tries to push his movie to a
different level of being out
of the box. But the success
of his past movies has proved
that the director never compromises
with his thoughts. He does the
same again in Jail.
Jail is a movie about a prisoner’s
struggle that is trapped in
the hands of the law and trying
hard to prove his innocence.
In the jail he meets several
interesting characters who either
makes his life hell or saves
him from trouble. The movie,
through out, shows Parag’s
struggle against the odds that
he faces in the jail which after
certain point of time seems
to be over done. |

Jail doesn’t live up to the expectation
of the Madhur Bhandarkar films that we have
seen so far. The plot is monotonous and
proves to be drab after sometime. You might
feel the pinch of time at some occasions.
We feel like giving the judgment and leave
the theater. Madhur, like in his previous
films, has got heavily inspired from newspaper
snippets and he tries to thrust all the
news he can recollect and push it in the
screenplay expecting the audience to connect
with the situations but it appears forced
and is more like watching India TV on the
big screen.
Seems Neil Nitin Mukesh is found to be apt
for roles involving detention and harassment.
Most of the times, he is unspoken and is
excellent with his subtleness and expressions.
But the young actor has to start experimenting.
Manoj Bajpai has underplayed his character,
which is badly written. Mughda Godse does
a decent job with her part but she is not
even close to her performance in Fashion.
The other characters of Abdul Ghani (Rahul
Singh) and Kabir Malik (Arya Babbar) are
suited well.
Cinematography
by Kalpesh Bhandarkar, is decent and some
experimental shots that the cinematographer
has tried go unnoticed with the heavy
background score. Music by Sharib Sabri,
Toshi Sabri and Shamir Tandon is very
plaintive despite a song by Lata Mangeshkar.
Art direction by Nitin Chandrakant Desai
was splendid but again few subtleties
which are needed are taken for granted.
The editing should have been stricter
as the movie drags along.
Overall
this make believe world from Madhur is
far from believable. And it’s about
time he comes out of the newspaper snippets
and makes something in the line of his
greatest achievement till date - 'Chandini
Bar'. Jail will have tough time at the
box-office.
Verdict:
Sentenced to a maximum of 2 weeks at the
theaters
