An
upcoming political thriller ‘No one
killed Jessica’, starring Rani Mukherji
and Vidya Balan, the first release of the
year, is inspired by the high-profile murder
of model Jessica Lal, a crime that rocked
the nation in 1999.
This UTV Spotboy production features Vidya
Balan as Jessica’s sister Sabrina,
while Rani Mukerjee plays a journalist named
Meera Gaiety who is passionate

about the case. After the acclaimed debut film Aamir
in 2008, director Rajkumar Gupta brings the tragic story
on celluloid in his second directorial venture that
is releasing this Friday. It sums up incidents related
to the murder and Sabrina and Meera's relentless struggle
in their pursuit towards justice for Jessica.
Vidya Balan, who made her debut in Parineeta in 2005,
plays the character of Jessica’s elder sister,
Sabrina Lal, who fought ceaselessly seeking justice
for her sister. Rani Mukherji seems ready for a comeback
even though a few of her earlier releases didn't work
magic at the box office. She dons a pivotal role along
with Vidya Balan. In the film, Rani plays the bold avatar
of a journalist who smokes cigarettes and hurls abuses
sans an inkling of fear.
Neil Bhoopalam, Rajesh Sharma, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub,
Bubbles Sabharwal, Yogendra Tikku, Geeta Sudan, Shireesh
Sharma and Samara Chopra play supportive roles.
It will definitely be interesting to see Rani and Vidya
in the same frame that too in a film dealing with such
a serious subject. It is the journey of a case through
legal complications, hostile witnesses and media pressure
over the course of seven years based on the story of
murdered model Jessica Lal who also worked as a bartender
before she was shot dead in a restaurant by Manu Sharma
in 1999, when she refused to serve him drinks after
the stipulated time. In 2006, Manu was acquitted, leading
to a fierce public uproar and campaigns by the media,
which eventually lead to a life sentence for Manu. One
such Times of India headline, No One Killed Jessica,
inspired the movie title.
Gupta clarifies that he has woven it through his imagination
and not purely judgmental. It seems a perfect concoction
of fact and fiction. In fact the joint commissioner
of police (southern range) at the time when the incident
took place wrote a letter to the censor board urging
it to ensure all the facts are presented correctly.
Music is by National award-winning composer Amit Trivedi,
who debuted in 2008 in Aamir and then created his critically
acclaimed Dev D. The album has been receiving generally
positive reviews from critics.
Is the public still interested to know what happened
on the fatal night and how Sabrina finally managed to
get justice? The answers to the questions will be known
this Friday when No One Killed Jessica hits the silver
screen. |
