Actress Charanya who starred as the friend of heroine Sandhya in the film Kadal was the one who is approached first to do the lead role in the film. But, after a battery of tests the director felt that Charanya will be more suitable for the heroine’s friend role. Later the debutant heroine Bharathi from the film Vayasu Pasanga was approached for the lead role, but as she too didn’t fulfill the taste of the director, she was also left out. Then it was the turn for our favorite Sandhya. When the director saw Sandhya returning from school in her school uniform, he immediately decided that she will be the heroine of Kadal. Like wise she was also given the character of a school student in the film.
