In the olden days, the ability to sing and dance was a prerequisite to make it to the top as a heroine. With technology improving playback singing and dubbing by another came to the rescue of those who were not blessed with an attractive voice or good pronunciation. Nevertheless, we have some heroines who can sing well. Shalini, Abirami, Kadhal Sandhya and Asin are good examples. Shalini has sung a song in Amarkalam which had a good response. Abirami is another talented actress. Although she has not sung so far in films, she invariably renders a song or two in stage shows. Sandhya has not yet had any offers for singing while Harris Jayaraj and Iman have invited Asin to sing in their forthcoming films.
