Vairamuthu’s latest book of poetry Kavithaiye Padalaaga was released a few months ago by Kalaignar Karunanidhi. The book aims to be a crossover between two genres – poetry and verse. The poems were set to music by Iniyavan. At a function yesterday, legendary film music director M.S. Viswanathan released the audio cassettes and CDs and director Mani Rathnam received the copies. Speaking on the occasion, Vairamuthu said that good poetry had to be marked by creative lyricism. Several songs, both film and non-film, were examples of poetic genius. For poetry to withstand the onslaught of other distractions, it has to be presented in a good metre set to lilting music. In this respect, music directors like MSV have done yeoman service. Films were the best media to reach out to a large number of people.
